Moore wants Hartlepool to emulate Wycombe Wanderers

League Two title chasers Wanderers host Hartlepool United with a mammoth 30 points separating the clubs in the promotion and relegation slots.

Moore is not giving up on tomorrow’s match with the Chairboys – far from it, he hopes Scott Flinders can enjoy his first league clean sheet since September (kick-off 3pm).

But, ultimately, he wants to see Pools “do a Wycombe”.

“We know there are no easy games,” said Moore who will be without Marlon Harewood tomorrow but hopes to have up to three new signings in the squad.

“We’ve proved that by the way we have played this season, they are all hard matches.

“But even though we have been conceding goals, it would be nice for Scott to keep a clean sheet.

“This is a great test for us – if we can do that there it would be a fantastic performance.

“I’ve watched the DVD from the Wycombe game [a 3-1 loss at the end of November] and we gave them a game before throwing it away.

“There’s some belief to be taken from that match.

“I’ll show them pieces from it and try to get confidence into them.

“While we know how hard it’s going to be [tomorrow] the pleasing this is we should take some heart out of Wycombe and what they have done.

“Look at where they were last season to where they are now.

“That’s what we’re trying to instill in our lads, Wycombe survived and have now kicked on.

“We can take a lot of encouragement from that – it can be done.

“But you have to make it happen, with players who want to win who have the mentality to win.

“If we concede a goal then we have to put a wedge in, not roll over and concede more. It’s about keeping it tight for 10 minutes and then go again.”

Moore is looking for improvements at both ends of the pitch.

He is still minus Harewood, who is serving the second instalment of a three-game ban, though Michael Woods is free to return and could feature.

Moore wants increased positivity from his players, even if they are playing one of League Two’s form sides.

“In our last game we had three shots from both strikers,” he explained.

“How are we going to win games and score goals like that?

“You have to be hungry, greedy, be on the front foot want to get in the box.

“The wide men have to go by people and deliver quality ball into the box and not hit the first man.

“Full-backs have to get forward and cross.

“That’s not been happening because basically the ball hasn’t been held up enough by the forwards.

“There are little bits that need to be worked on.”

Moore will be looking for a reaction from the side following the last match – a 2-0 defeat to Morecambe, a result and performance which disturbed him and upset him in equal measure, describing the display as “shameful”.

He said: “What’s gone has gone now, I’ve had a chat with them and had my say.

“I’m not normally one to rant and rave in public about players, but I’ve been here two weeks and that’s how I felt [after Sunday].

“That’s how angry I was and I want them to feel that way.”

Moore wants more passion and volume from his players and joked that he had seen some evidence of that this week.

“You can coach them and try to improve them but if it’s in your nature not to be a talker then it’s hard to change that,” he said.

“You need to keep chipping away, try to get them talking to each other.

“We almost had a fight at training – I nearly had a heart attack!

“It was the first time I have seen anyone with a little bit of feeling so that was an improvement, it shows they are starting to care.”
