Hartlepool Carnival fairground back with a bang

Scores of families flocked to Murphy’s funfair on the Headland where thrills and spills are in store on over 100 rides and attractions.
It is a key part of Hartlepool Carnival with the Murphy’s family coming to town for 94 years.

Girls from the Hartlepool Hawks Cheerleading Academy got the fair off to an energetic start with a dynamic display featuring flips, cartwheels and balancing in the air.
Head coach Beccii Taylor said: “They performed really well. They love opening the carnival, it’s the highlight of the year.
“I think this is our seventh year.”

He said: “I would like to welcome John Murphy’s Fair for the 94th year at the Headland.

Hide Ad“I officially open the fair and hope you all have a great time.”
Billy Freeman, who runs the fair with John Murphy’s nephew also called John, said the fair features a mix of old favourites and new attractions.
He said: “We have got what is called The Bomber which is like a giant windmill and a new one called the Rhythm Master.

“We have also got all the old favourites.
“The people of Hartlepool couldn’t be more helpful when we come here.

Hide Ad“There is nowhere else where could open next to a street of houses and nobody object.”
A carnival committee spokesman said: “It has been a great opening with the sun shining on us. It has been a good turnout already.”

The next family event by the carnival committee is a Family Treasure Dig on Monday, August 6, at the Fish Sands, at 11am.
Find the buried doubloons for cash prizes. Entry is free and free refreshments will be available to all children.
The fairground is on the town moor daily between 2pm and 10pm from now until Saturday, August 11.
